Item Description
For bid is a Fantastic Milk Glass Footed Comport by the Westmoreland Glass Co.  This piece is pictured in the book "Westmoreland Glass - Identification and value guide" by Wilson on page 186.  It is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks etc.  The painted decoration has little to no wear.  The gilding is worn along the top edge while the bottom half shows only minor wear.  Depending on the direction placed it does lean as shown making its height between 7 1/2 and 7 7/8 inches.
It was noted in the book that after a break of more than 20 years this piece shows a very early re-use of lustre gold.  It also notes that because milk glass sets up quickly, a wafer was used to connect the bowl to the dolphin...(Ah..that lean!).  Lead was also added to extend the workability of the milk glass which makes this compote heavier than its glass counterparts.  The leaf and berry design seems to be one of the purple chokeberry.  If you are a Westmoreland Lover this is a Really Nice Comport!
