Exquisite WESTMORELAND Glass Company MILK GLASS Compote SWEETMEAT Candy Dish, Hand Painted ROSES & BOWS pattern on Doric Mold, 1946-1981 from Grapeville, Pennsylvania, USA
    DESCRIPTION:
This beautiful sweetmeat compote on the Doric DO-34 mold Line #3 (originally called Crystal Lace) was produced in milk glass and hand painted with the Roses & Bows pattern.  The ruffled rim and panels on the milk glass are so elegant.  The unusual 3 legged pedestal adds to its charm.  The sprays have a single pink rose, not two roses as some artists painted.  The colors are very deep.  The trim found on the base of the pedestal and the scalloped rim at the top is gold, not purple.

    DIMENSIONS:
The compote has a top diameter of 5 1/8"" edge to edge at the widest point.  It has a height of 5".  The stable base has a diameter of 2 15/16".
    HISTORY/MARKS:
In 1889 Charles and George West purchased an abandoned glass factory in Grapeville, PA.  Their initial emphasis was on the production of commercial and novelty items eventually producing large quantities of quality glassware with attractive cuttings or hand painted decorations.  By the 1930's the depression and foreign imports had driven the company deeply into debt.  Beginning in 1937 James Brainard revitalized the company and introduced many new colored glasswares and patterns.  By the mid 1940's these measures returned the company to prosperity.  Customer demand for milk glass grew rapidly after WWII peaking in 1957 at 95% of the company's output.  Westmoreland closed its doors for the final time in 1984.  In 1946, an intertwined “W” and “G” were introduced and used until 1981 when David Grossman brought the factory and initials were abandoned altogether in favor of a encircled Westmoreland.
